You're reading: Donetsk authorities report gunfire, explosions in city

The situation remained tense in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, last night, with gunfire routinely heard in the Leninsky, Voroshylovsky and Kyivsky districts of the city, the Donetsk administration has said.

Local residents also reposted occasional shots and explosions in the Kirovsky, Kuibyshevsky and Kyivsky districts of Donetsk. The city authorities have not said whether anyone was killed or injured.

Power supplies were cut off to 124 electricity substations at 01:35 a.m. on Oct. 17, causing blackouts in parts of the Voroshylovsky and Kyivsky districts. The cause of the incident is being investigated.

Power supplies had been restored to 24 electricity substations by 8:00 a.m.

Donetsk’s central water utility was also affected by a power outage, but its power supplies were promptly restored using backup sources. In addition, power lines supplying electricity to the city’s northern water utility were damaged at 4:00 a.m.

Teams from the city’s gas distribution company are working to restore gas supplies to parts of the Kuibyshevsky district.

“If there are no artillery strikes, gas supplies will resume to 500 private houses on Hrekova, Svitlychna and Artemivska Streets,” the city administration said.

Public transport is Donetsk is functioning as usual.
