You're reading: EU adds separatist leaders to sanctions list

Eleven separatist leaders of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics have made it on a new list of sanctions compiled by the European Union, bringing the total number of individuals subject to sanctions related to Ukraine’s territorial integrity to 72.

On the latest list, published on July 12, is the “so-called” prime minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Aleksandr Borodai, as well as Aleksandr Khodakovsky,
a separatist militia commander, and Marat Bashirov, who claims to be the prime minister of Luhansk People’s Republic.

“In view
of the gravity of the situation in Eastern Ukraine, the council has today
expanded the list of persons subject to targeted sanctions for actions
undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and
independence,” the EU Council said in a press release issued on July 11.

Another 11
persons “responsible for and supporting such activities in Eastern
Ukraine” will be targeted with a travel ban and a freeze of their assets
within the EU, the council noted.
