Further sanctions by the European Union may have a significant impact on the Russian economy, but their main objective is to stop Russia's destructive actions in relation to Ukraine, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said.
“Messages come from Brussels that today the EU is seriously thinking about the expansion of sanctions against Russia,” Director of the Department of Policy and Communications at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleksiy Makeyev told Channel 5 on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
When asked what forms these sanctions could have, Makeyev said: “These are further sectoral economic sanctions that have the greatest impact on the Russian economy.”
“Sanctions as such are not needed for the European Union or Ukraine. They are one of the mechanisms to push Russia back to a civilized track,” he said.
According to Makeyev, “the EU is considering absolutely all possible options to do this.”
“But the main thing is not how the sanctions will be imposed and how they will hit Russia and affect the lives of ordinary Russians. The main thing is that these sanctions could push Russia to deeds, not words. They have to stop destructive actions,” the diplomat said.
