You're reading: Fighting continues in tense war zone

Attacks over the last 24 hours show that Russian forces and their separatist allies continue to violate the Feb. 15 cease-fire agreement signed in Minsk between the Ukrainian and Russian governments, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.

On March 22, Col. Andriy Lysenko said that the separatists used mortars, automatic and small arms, and grenades while in atttacks on villages at the war front.

Two artillery attacks were launched on Avdiyivka and Kransnogorovka, both in Donetsk Oblast, Lysenko said, with Ukrainian forces engaged in intensive fighting with militias.Three Ukrainian soldiers were injured but none killed, he said.

Air surveillance monitored nine unmarked drones in the war zone also.

Also, on March 21, a person was killed by an explosive device in Popasna district, while Lysenko said that a Ministry of Defense official was murdered in Volonovakha, but details were scant.

Officials continue to see illegal formations of Russian separatists, suggest that they are regrouping for renewed offensives.
