You're reading: Hug says OSCE monitors in Donbas need air reconnaissance gear

Deputy Chief Monitor of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine Alexander Hug said the OSCE monitoring mission must be better equipped if its work in Donbas is to become more effective.

The mission must be better equipped technically, and provided with air reconnaissance gear to be used in places that cannot be accessed, he told the Ukraine-NATO Inter-parliamentary council in Kyiv on June 8.

Hug also said that OSCE monitors cannot reach part of the Donbas territory, shut by the conflicting parties.

Besides that, the monitors do not travel to some districts of Donbas as this may carry too many risks.

Regarding the shelling attacks, Hug said that they are usually launched at night when the mission is not working.

The OSCE monitoring mission will start night-time patrolling after special training, he said.

The mission is working on programs which will necessitate a different kind of training if night-time patrolling is to become regular, Hug said.
