Kharkiv Mayor Hennadiy Kernes, who is undergoing treatment at an Israeli clinic after surviving an assassination attack, has regained consciousness, Kharkiv City Council spokesman Yuriy Sydorenko told Interfax.
“Daniil [Kernes’s son] has just texted: ‘We are conscious!’,” Sydorenko said.
It was reported earlier that Kernes was shot during a jog on Belgorod Highway in Kharkiv on April 28. His bodyguards accompanying him in a van delivered him to a hospital, where doctors operated on him, put him in an induced coma, and hooked him up to a ventilator.
Early on April 29, Kernes, accompanied by his wife and a team of Israeli doctors, was transported to an Israeli clinic, where he later underwent two more surgeries.
