BRUSSELS - Latvia, which will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2015, will do its best to normalize the situation in Ukraine through talks with Russia, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma said.

We, together with Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, will do our best to calm down the situation in Ukraine, she said during a joint press conference with EC President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels on Dec. 3.

Straujuma emphasized that it is unacceptable that a part of the country to be simply annexed in XXI century, and nobody responded to what happened.

According to her, it would be better for the whole Europe if a dialogue with Russia to be carried.

Being asked on possible problems with Russia-speaking population in Latvia, the Latvia’s government leader stressed that the situation is calm and stable despite the country is suffering from powerful information flows from the Russian television and other information sources.

The Latvian premier said that she hopes the reforms would start in Ukraine and the situation in Ukraine would get stable after the new government in Ukraine is appointed.
