You're reading: NATO, EU does not recognize rebel ‘elections’

BRUSSELS - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has called illegal the so-called elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics.

At the joint press conference, Stoltenberg and Mogherini said that NATO and the EU countries would not recognize these elections.

“We discussed Ukraine, where the so-called elections by armed separatist groups in the east of the country run directly counter to the Minsk agreements. NATO Allies will not recognize these so-called elections,” Stoltenberg said.

“We have stated very clearly already on Nov. 2 evening that the so-called elections are not only illegal and illegitimate and will not be recognized, but also that they risk to put in danger, in serious danger the path of dialog and peace that was put in place first of all by President [of Ukraine Petro] Poroshenko with the work on the Minsk protocol,” Mogherini said for her part.
