The OSCE special monitoring mission operating on the Ukrainian-Russian border is facing restrictions in its work, which is unacceptable, President of the OSCE Parliament Assembly Ilkka Kanerva has said.
While delivering a report on the situation in Ukraine in Vienna on Thursday, Nov. 13, he said that in order to achieve the fulfillment of the OSCE mission, it was unacceptable to use the restrictions of its mandate. He also said that the OSCE mission was currently limited in its work and that if it is not allowed to do its job, then the question arises whether it should be done.
Kanerva also said it was unacceptable that the operations of the OSCE mission are discredited or resisted.
He said that the work of the OSCE mission on the border between Ukraine and Russia was very important. He also said that the special monitoring mission was providing objective information about what is happening on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
At the same time, the question remains open regarding security in the east of Ukraine, including for OSCE observers, he said. He noted that the security of observers should be a priority for the organization.
Kanerva also called on the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to use all opportunities not only to support the OSCE’s mediation efforts in Ukraine, but also to prevent the development of the crisis.
