More than 1,000 servicemen of the Russian army stationed in militant-controlled territories in eastern Ukraine have recently returned to Russia, the press center for the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) has reported.

“A decrease in the number of units of Russian troops was recorded in the territories controlled by militants. More than 1,000 Russian troops have left Ukraine,” the press center reported on its Facebook page early on Tuesday.

According to the report, instead of regular units of Russian troops the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk “People’s Republics” are trying to create their own law enforcement structures.

“The leaders of militants announced the creation in Donetsk of the first regiment of interior troops of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” reads the report.
