Moscow - The Kyiv authorities, which have decided to launch an operation to retake control of Sloviansk, will bear responsibility before the people, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has said.
“The persons who made a decision to launch such an operation using combat aircraft and the Armed Forces will inevitably bear responsibility primarily before the Ukrainian people. Probably, this is what counts the most in this situation,” Peskov told the Rossiya 24 television station on Friday.
“I can say with regret now that such actions on the part of the Kyiv authorities have crossed out the Geneva agreements. It is hardly possible to say today that someone may expect at least parts of these agreements to be implemented,” he said.
Russia continues to make efforts to help stabilize the situation in Ukraine, he said.
“Nevertheless, Russia continues to make consistent efforts aimed at de-escalation. We call on both the European capitals and the U.S. to give an appropriate assessment of the ongoing events, and we certainly urge those who are using the Air Force against towns and villages to come to their senses,” Peskov said.
