You're reading: Poroshenko hopes US will facilitate de-escalation of situation in Donbas – meeting with Nuland

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland who visited Ukraine. At the meeting, Poroshenko expressed hope that the U.S. would continue facilitating de-escalation of the conflict in Donbas, the press service of the President reported on July 17.

“He [Poroshenko] expressed hope that the US would continue contributing to the de-escalation of the situation in the Donbas, and addressing such pressing issues as a complete cease-fire by the militants, removal of heavy weapons, proper international monitoring, release of all hostages, including Ukrainian citizens illegally held in Russia, and free access of the international humanitarian aid to the affected regions,” reads the statement.

The Head of State stressed that Ukraine was adhering to the Minsk agreements consistently and was doing everything possible for their proper implementation.

In addition, Poroshenko and Nuland discussed the constitutional reform implementation process in Ukraine in terms of the decentralization. The Assistant Secretary of State congratulated the President of Ukraine on the successful vote of the Verkhovna Rada for the sending the bill to amend the Constitution in terms power the decentralization of power to the Constitutional Court.

Victoria Nuland confirmed that the United States supported Ukraine’s approaches to addressing the situation in Donbas further and would continue working effectively for consistent and complete implementation of the Minsk agreements and providing required assistance.
