Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on European countries to provide assistance to Ukraine to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the country's eastern regions, the presidential press service has reported.

The head of state said this at a meeting with the heads of the parliaments of Denmark, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden in Kyiv on Friday.

“Reporting on the situation in Donbas, the president stressed the need for urgent action to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and urged European countries to join in providing assistance to Ukraine in the establishment of a peaceful life,” the report says.

Poroshenko said that it was necessary to provide more assistance to Ukraine to conduct reforms and expand economic and defense cooperation.

“This should be a mutually beneficial partnership,” Poroshenko said.

He also proposed that the parliaments of the five countries send their representatives for early parliamentary elections in Ukraine on Oct. 26.
