Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - President Vladimir Putin has called Americans the true puppeteers standing behind the coup in Ukraine.

“The trick of the situation was that formally the opposition [in Ukraine] was supported primarily by Europeans but we knew perfectly, not simply realized, but knew that our American friends were the true puppeteers. It was them to who helped to train nationalists, fighting teams in Western Ukraine, there was also training in Poland, partly in Lithuania. What did our partners do? Promoted a coup d’etat,” Putin said in the documentary “Crimea – Return to the Motherland” aired on Russia 1 channel on March 15.

They started acting from a position of strength, Putin said.

“I don’t think this is the best way to run affairs in the international arena in general and in relation to the states of the post-Soviet period in particular,” he said.

“These states are not yet well-established. They are fragile and their state set-up, constitution and system of law must be handled with care,” Putin said.

“All this was thrown away to the fringe and crushed. The consequences were very severe. Some accepted this, while others do not want to. The country was divided,” he said.

Before opting for the actions that occurred in Kyiv on Feb. 21 and 22, 2014 “one should have though about the consequences of what people, set to resolve political problems that way, could bring the country,” the Russian president said.

“It is easy to turn everything upside down. However, one should take the legitimate interests of the partners into account if we want to treat each other with respect,” he said.

Regarding historical injustice, Sevastopol has always been called a city of Russian naval glory.

“Everything was turned upside down,” he said.
