You're reading: Ruble down markedly against dollar, euro

Moscow -- The ruble is falling markedly against the dollar and euro at the Moscow Exchange on Jan. 5 as oil prices dropped to five-year lows. 

The dollar traded at 58.6-59.3 rubles/$1 after the first two minutes or so, 2.95 rubles above its previous closing and 2.71 rubles above the official exchange rate.

The euro began the day at 71.86 rubles/EUR1, 3.2 rubles above previous closing and 3.5 rubles above the official rate.

The bi-currency basket ($0.55 and EUR0.45) started the day at 64.76 rubles, up 3.06 rubles from the previous closing value.
