Moscow – The Russian delegation to an air safety conference underway at the Montreal headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has denied the alleged unofficial talks with Kyiv aimed to reopen an air corridor over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

“Reports alleging unofficial negotiations on the reopening of an air corridor over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov held between Russia and Ukraine in Montreal are not true,” a source in the Russian delegation told Interfax.

He underlined that a relevant Russia agency was controlling air traffic in that area.

“Air traffic controllers and technical means of Russia’s air navigation service provider, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise State Air Traffic Management Corporation of the Russian Federation, are managing air traffic in the area covered by the Simferopol area control center consistent with the standards recommended by ICAO practices,” the source said.

There have been media reports claiming unofficial negotiations between Russia and Ukraine aimed to reopen an international air corridor over the Black Sea.

The airspace above the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov practically became a no-fly zone for international flights after Crimea’s accession to Russia.
