You're reading: Stoltenberg says Putin allegation on NATO legion in Ukraine is ‘nonsense’

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has dismissed as "nonsense" the allegation made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that a NATO legion was fighting alongside Ukrainian government forces in the east of the country.

“The statement that there is a NATO legion in Ukraine is nonsense. There is no NATO legion,” Stoltenberg told reporters on Jan. 26.

“The foreign forces in Ukraine are Russian, so I think that this is the problem, that there are Russian forces in Ukraine and Russia backs the separatists with equipment,” he added.

President Putin had earlier claimed that the “Ukrainian army is a NATO legion that is not pursuing the national interests of Ukraine, but is aiming to reach its geopolitical goal of constraining Russia.”
