Ukraine's border checkpoints will be connected to the automated Interpol system, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has said.

The task of the State Border Guard Service will be integrating our control systems with Interpol’s system to check any citizen crossing Ukraine’s state border with a database to ascertain if the individual is wanted by Interpol, which must be achieved by September, Yatseniuk said in Kyiv during a ceremony to present EU technical help for the State Border Guard Service, which was held on June 15.

Yatsenyuk said that by September 49 border checkpoints must be included in Interpol’s network.

Yatsenyuk said border security was a key condition for obtaining the visa-free regime with the EU.

“The task of the State Border Guard Service is to solve technical issues for Ukraine to obtain the visa free regime. And [I] am sure that the Border Guard Service will accomplish this task,” he said.

As reported, the Border Guard Service received equipment and technical assistance from the EU worth over EUR 7 million. In particular, the equipment includes 142 off-road vehicles, 51 station wagons, 142 thermal scopes and 36 laptops.
