Venezuelan authorities say three small boats carrying 34 people are missing at sea.

Vice Adm. Carlos Giacopini tells the state-run Venezuelan News Agency that the three boats left on Saturday from Los Testigos islands and did not arrive as planned at Margarita Island.

He said 34 people were making the trip of about 50 miles (80 kilometers) between the Venezuelan islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Emergency management director Luis Diaz told the state news agency on Sunday that a team was searching for the boats using helicopters, patrol boats, a frigate and about 40 small fishing boats.
