You're reading: Bosnian Serb leader calls off referendum

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — Bosnia's Serb leader says he will ask his parliament to call off a disputed referendum after receiving assurances from the EU's top foreign official that Serb concerns with Bosnia's judicial system will be addressed.

Milorad Dodik said Friday at a joint press conference with Catherine Ashton in Banja Luka — the home of the parliament of the Serb region of Bosnia — that he was "satisfied" with the talks. Ashton stated that the EU will review the role of Bosnia’s judicial institutions.

The referendum was to reflect Bosnian Serb disapproval of the federal war crimes court, which Dodik claims is biased against Serbs, as well as with the actions of an administrator appointed by the U.N. Security Council to oversee the running of the nation.
