LONDON — British officials say the first Bosnian Serb convicted of genocide for his role in the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica has been assaulted in a British prison.
An official at Britain’s Justice Ministry told The Associated Press that Radislav Krstic was hospitalized after an attack by three fellow inmates at northern England’s high-security Wakefield prison Friday.
The former general has been serving his 35-year sentence for aiding and abetting genocide in the U.K. since he was transferred to Britain from The Hague in 2004.
Krstic’s forces helped organize the slaughter of thousands of men and teenage boys in Europe’s worst civilian massacre since World War II.
Krstic’s condition was unclear, although a second official at a nearby hospital said he had since been released.
