LONDON (AP) — A committee of British lawmakers says it intends to examine the government's decision not to ban deepwater drilling in the country's waters.

The Energy and Climate Change Committee made the announcement Wednesday. Committee chairman Tim Yeo said the committee intends to question British Petroleum, industry experts and environmentalists to find out whether the government "has made the right decision in ruling out a moratorium on new deepwater drilling in the waters west of Shetland."

It will also examine whether Britain’s safety and environmental regulations are sufficient. In June, energy minister Chris Huhne said a review found the country’s regimes "among the most robust in the world."

The committee expects to take testimony when lawmakers return from summer recess.
