HOUSTON, May 17 (Reuters) - BP Plc's plan to siphon oil from a blown-out well a mile (1.6 km) beneath the Gulf of Mexico could eventually capture half of the oil spewing from the well, a company executive said on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing in Robert, Louisiana, a Coast Guard official said oil from the massive spill has not yet entered a powerful ocean current known as the LOOP current.
