ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter's eldest grandson has easily won a seat in the Georgia state Senate. It makes him the first Carter elected in Georgia politics since the 1970s.
Jason Carter ran in a special election Tuesday, May 11, as a Democrat, the same party as his grandfather, for the vacant seat.
Unofficial returns show Carter defeating Democrat Tom Stubbs with 65 percent of the vote to 23 percent.
The 34-year-old Carter, who is a lawyer, was at an Atlanta-area restaurant with his grandmother, former first lady Rosalynn Carter and other relatives.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter stumped with their grandson on Saturday to rally voters to the polls.
