ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's state-run news agency says Kurdish rebels have attacked a military post near the border with Iraq, setting off clashes that killed three soldiers and nine rebels.
The Anatolia news agency says clashes erupted late Monday, July 5, when the rebels fired at the military post in Hakkari province with long-range weapons.
Anatolia says a military operation is under way to catch rebels who escaped the area.
The rebels have escalated attacks recently, saying the government has ignored their call for a dialogue. They frequently stage hit-and-run attacks from bases in northern Iraq.
The violence has claimed the lives of some 40,000 since 1984.
