You're reading: Clinton says Cuba prisoner release a ‘positive sign’

WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - Cuba's decision to release 52 political prisoners is overdue but still a "positive sign" by the government of the communist-ruled island, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Thursday.

"We were were encouraged by the apparent agreement between the Roman Catholic Church and the authorities in Cuba for the release of 52 political prisoners," Clinton told reporters. "We think that’s a positive sign. It’s something that is overdue but nevertheless very welcome."
