WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Justice says a Dutch company that was part of a joint venture that won $6 billion in contracts to build natural gas facilities in Nigeria has agreed to pay $240 million to resolve bribery charges.
Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that Snamprogetti Netherlands B.V. participated in a scheme to bribe Nigerian government officials to obtain the contracts to build the natural gas plant.
Prosecutors in Texas have charged the company with one count of conspiracy and one count of aiding and abetting violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
The government has agreed to defer prosecution on the criminal case for two years as part of a deal with the company, its parent, Saipem S.p.A., and its previous owner, Eni S.p.A.
