The European Commission deems it wise to form an international consortium to control Ukraine's transit pipelines, said Head of the European Commission Delegation to Russia Marc Franco.

The European Commission can only welcome any solution, any formula that could help settle the current problem, Franco told Russian reporters on Thursday.

This idea must be thoroughly weighed by experts, he said.

The Russian side earlier said it was prepared to consider participation in the Ukrainian gas transportation system, but preferred to form an international consortium.

Kyiv, in turn, has categorically rejected the idea, saying the Ukrainian gas transportation system will remain 100% state owned.
