BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Parliament has called for a ban on meat from cloned animals, saying more tests are needed to prove it is safe for humans to eat.
Kartika Liotard, the lawmaker in charge of steering rules on new foods through the assembly Wednesday, said most parliamentarians have "ethical objections to the industrial production of cloned meat for food" because the animals have more defects, age at a faster rate and die earlier than others.
Lawmakers want EU governments to agree to insert the ban in draft rules they are discussing on new types of food covering nanotechnology and meat from animals fed genetically modified plants.
No cloned meat is on sale in Europe. EU food safety experts say that meat and milk from cloned animals is probably safe for humans.
