BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission is proposing to double the deposit insurance maximum bank account holders across the 27 EU countries to €100,000 ($125,700).

It also proposed Monday to raise compensation for investors who lose money because of fraud.

EU Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier said the plans would "bring transparency and responsibility to Europe’s financial system."

His proposals will become law once approved by the European Parliament and the 27 EU governments.
