Theresa May has told Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, that the UK needs time to prepare for its exit from the EU but was anxious to make it a "smooth process".
The prime minister’s spokeswoman said there was no sense the UK was under pressure on timing as Mrs May held talks with Mr Tusk at Downing Street.
