You're reading: Georgia expects European Union to approve visa-free travel regime next week

Georgian Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili hopes that existent international problems will not only spare Georgia-EU rapprochement but will even accelerate this process.

“We are expecting the European Commission’s opinion on liberalization of visas next week. There is preliminary information that the answer will be affirmative but let us wait for the text,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Georgia “is fully aware” of sentiments in the European Commission, the European Parliament and most European countries, the speaker said.

“With this in mind, we believe that the current problems related to migration processes and the threat of terrorism will have no impact on Georgia-EU rapprochement but may even accelerate it in certain areas,” Usupashvili said.

If the European Commission gives a positive answer, Georgian citizens will be entitled to visa-free travel to EU countries already in summer 2016.
