Kazakhstan and Turkey have the sufficient economic and political potential to promote trade routes in Eurasia similar to the Great Silk Road, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said in the Kazakh Parliament in Astana on Wednesday.
"Today, Turkey and Kazakhstan will have to play an important role and to bear a historic responsibility for promoting new transport, communications and energy corridors, in other words, create a new Silk Road linking Europe and Asia," Gul said.
"The Eurasian continent, where the Turk world is located, continues playing its strategic historic role, which has been bolstered thanks to Eurasia’s rich underground and land resources," the Turkish president said.
"The strength of our countries", as well as their beneficial location in the region that houses the world’s major producers and markets, open up "vast opportunities for cooperation" in the economy, he said.
"The completion of the Kazakhstan-assisted project to build the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which will link China and the Far East with European markets promptly and reliably, will mark a crucial step toward our goal of reviving the historic Silk Road," Gul said.
