MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — The president of a separatist region of Georgia is in Nicaragua to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Central American country's Sandinista revolution.
Abkhazia President Sergei Bagapsh on Sunday praised Nicaragua, one of the few countries that recognizes the independence of Abkhazia and another separatist Georgian region, South Ossetia.
South Ossetia President Eduard Kokoity was also en route to Nicaragua but his trip was delayed after technical problems forced his private jet to land in Finland on Saturday. Finnish airport officials said Kokoity left their country Sunday.
Georgia lost control of the two regions in 2008 after a short war with Russia.
