WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish police say they have detained a man who defiled a memorial plaque to the late President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others killed in a plane crash this spring.

The incident comes amid a bitter dispute in Poland over how to commemorate the victims.

Police spokesman Maciej Karczynski said the man threw a jar with feces at the gray granite plaque Tuesday afternoon. His motive wasn’t yet clear.

The plaque was unveiled last week by new President Bronislaw Komorowski and city officials in hopes of appeasing a group of Kaczynski supporters preventing the removal of a tall wooden cross in front of the presidential palace.

They want the cross to stay until a fitting memorial is built to the victims and are not satisfied with the plaque.
