ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — A shark has attacked and killed a man who was surfing off western Australia.

Western Australia police said the man was attacked early Tuesday, August 17, while surfing alone at a beach near Gracetown, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) south of the state capital, Perth.

A police spokeswoman told The Associated Press that the man received life-threatening injuries and died later at Margaret River Hospital. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

The man has not yet been identified and no further details were available.
