LIMA, Peru (AP) — Belgian mining giant Nyrstar says it has purchased two mines in northern Peru for about $23 million.

The world’s No.1 zinc producer says the Contonga mine contains zinc, copper and silver and has a current yield of 660 tons per day of metal.

The other mine, the Pucarrajo, has zinc and silver deposits and produces 1,100 tons daily.

Nyrstar said in a statement Monday that it is also taking on $16 million in debt associated with recent acquisitions.

Contonga and Pucarrajo previously belonged to Peruvian miner Huallanca.

Both mines are located in the Ancash region, about 300 miles (500 kilometers) north of the Peruvian capital of Lima.
