Following fresh unrest in the South of the country, the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) has called forthesituation in Kyrgyzstan to be stabilized as soon as possible
The Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) hopes that the situation in Kyrgyzstan will stabilize as soon as possible, said Zhanibek Karibzhanov, a deputy speaker of the Kazakh parliament and the OSCE chairman-in-office’s special envoy for Kyrgyzstan.
"The latest events that have occurred in the south of Kyrgyzstan dictate the need for as speedy and as coordinated settlement of the problem as possible," Karibzhanov said at a special session within the framework of the OSCE Trans-Asian Parliamentary Forum in Almaty on Saturday.
"I want to emphasize my hope that the people of Kyrgyzstan will derive lessons from the past events and the country will return onto a normal development track," he said.
Karibzhanov suggested that it is critical for Kyrgyzstan to take a number of steps to ensure its positive development.
In particular, the Kyrgyz authorities should focus on maintaining stable public order and security of the people and their property, Karibzhanov said.
The strengthening of the government institutions is also among the priorities, he said.
In order to bring the situation back to normal, Kyrgyzstan also needs to resolve a number of constitutional and legal issues, establish dialogue between the government, society and political parties, provide informational and ideological support for reform, restore its economy, observe human rights, efficiently manage its borders, and combat drug trafficking, terrorism, and extremism, he said.
Kazakhstan is holding the OSCE rotating chairmanship in 2010. Its leadership played a key role in preventing possible civil war in Kyrgyzstan after former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was deposed in April.
