WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Warsaw's mayor has warned that 100,000 residents risk of having their houses flooded as the Vistula River, which runs through the city, remains dangerously high.
With the country suffering its worst flooding in decades, rescuers are working around the clock to shore up river banks and evacuate people from flooded homes.
The flooding struck the country’s south last week after heavy rains. That area is recovering but rivers rushing toward the Baltic Sea are bringing huge volumes of water to northern areas.
A governor in central Poland, Jacek Kozlowski, said 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares) flooded near the city of Plock after the Vistula breached its banks, and 4,000 people and 5,000 animals were evacuated.
