The ailing mother of Poland's president who was killed in a plane crash in Russia last month has finally been told about his death.

Lech Kaczynski died in a plane crash April 10 along with 95 others. Kaczynski’s 83-year-old mother, Jadwiga, has been hospitalized with lung and heart problems for months and doctors said at first that the news would be too much for her.

Kaczynski’s twin brother, Jaroslaw, waited six weeks. Elzbieta Jakubiak, a close aide to Jaroslaw Kaczynski who himself is now a presidential candidate, said in a televised interview late Tuesday that he finally broke the news that day, and it came as a huge shock to the mother. The news hit Polish papers Wednesday, which is Mother’s Day in Poland.
