SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A well-known radio journalist was stabbed more than 20 times early Tuesday and police say they detained a teenager he befriended several months ago.

Jose Arriaga Stuart is expected to recover, but he has a collapsed lung and is undergoing surgery, Lt. Jose Arrocho said.

A police officer found Arriaga bleeding in the bushes after he stopped to investigate why an SUV was parked along a road with its doors open, Arrocho said.

Police detained an 18-year-old man who said he got into a fight with Arriaga over payment of sexual favors, Arrocho said, but the man was released until police can question Arriaga. Arrocho said officials expect to file charges.

Arriaga hosts a nightly show on WKAQ radio in which he discusses news topics with callers.

The stabbing occurred in Corozal, a northern mountain town in the U.S. Caribbean territory.
