LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace says the husband of Queen Elizabeth II has had surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, a common painful condition caused by the compression of a nerve in the wrist.

The palace says Prince Philip was admitted as a day patient at undisclosed hospital Monday for surgery on his left hand. He canceled a dinner engagement in central London and is not expected to travel with the queen when she visits the English railway town of Crewe on Thursday, his 89th birthday.

He is expected to resume official functions on Friday.

Philip has suffered a string of minor, mostly sports-related injuries over the years — most recently when he hurt his ankle in a carriage driving accident in April.
