CAIRO (AP) — A police official says seven people were killed and one person was injured when an uninhabited building collapsed in the Egyptian capital.

The official says the victims were laborers who used to sleep on the ground floor on the building after work. He also says that local authorities had ordered the building — located in the el-Darb el-Ahmar neighborhood — be razed because it was a danger to the public.

The official says rescue workers pulled the bodies of the victims out of the rubble. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Shoddy materials, illegal construction and corruption are usually blamed for frequent building collapses in Egypt.
