Tiraspol, Dec. 16 (Interfax) - Oleg Belyakov, the head of the Transdniestrian delegation to the Joint Control Commission for the Transdniestrian settlement, has opposed promoting U.S. and EU representatives from observers to mediators in the settlement.

“The 5+2 format has so far proved inefficient, and there is no reason to transform it into the derivative format of the ‘seven,'” Belyakov told journalists.

According to media reports, the idea of promoting U.S. and EU representatives to mediators was voiced by Moldovan Deputy Minister of Reintegration Ion Stavila, Belyakov said.

This issue can be discussed only after the 5+2 format proves its efficiency, he said, noting that “the negotiating format can be changed only with the consent of all parties under the signed agreements.”

The 5+2 format brings together Moldova, Transdniestria, Russia, Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the United States and the European Union as observers.
