BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The Hungarian Defense Ministry says nearly 1,000 soldiers are working to bolster flood defenses in Hungary, where heavy rainfall has led to overflowing rivers and streams. Two people have died due to flooding in neighboring Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Railroad services have been suspended in several parts of northeastern Hungary, the region most affected by the flooding.
In Slovakia, where hundreds of people have been evacuated, TA3 news television that says the body of a 38-year-old man was found after his car was swept away by high waters in the town of Vysna Sebastova. A person also was found drowned in the eastern Czech city of Zlin.
Officials in Serbia describe the situation as "critical," while rescuers in Bosnia are using boats to help residents.
