You're reading: U.S. urges nonviolent resolution after Ukraine’s president dissolves parliament

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. government is closelymonitoring Ukraine’s political situation and pushing for apeaceful resolution after President Viktor Yushchenkodissolved the country’s parliament.

The parliament ignored Yushchenko’s order and vowed tocontinue meeting. The deadlock follows months ofmaneuvering by Yushchenko and his rival, Prime MinisterViktor Yanukovych, and signals the possible return ofcompeting protests, tent camps and political rallies to thestreets of Kiev.

“The United States calls on all Ukrainian politicalleaders to take full responsibility for their supporters’actions and to maintain calm,” U.S. State Departmentspokesman Sean McCormack said Monday.

McCormack said the United States is urging “all partiesto respect the rule of law and resolve disputesnonviolently, in a manner consistent with Ukraine’sdemocratic values and national interests.”
