GALLERIES
THURSDAY 24
“Swirl.” Wax bas-reliefs by Ilya Isupov
The colorful bas-reliefs by Ilya Isupov combine primitively realistic and tribal styles. They depict characters from our everyday lives: vacationers, pedestrians, neighbors. Accomplished in wax and richly painted, they acquire the hues of mystic voodoo dolls. Working on the images, Isupov used both traditional and original techniques. As a result of such experiments in the foreground of one of the works we can see a woman with two noses and three eyes.
Tseh Gallery (16 Ilyinska, 531-9904). Through June 8.
“Shade of Wind.” Paintings by Anna Gidora
The blurry paintings by Anna Gidora are meant to reveal the fragility and lightness of the wind and its “shadow.” They are viewed not only as physical substances, but rather as invisible conveyors of somebody’s thoughts and dreams. All the paintings are saturated with vague philosophy and made in large brush strokes.
Tryptykh Gallery (34 Andriyivskiy Uzviz, 279-0759). Through June 6.
“Ukrainians.” Photos by Yuriy Bilak
French photographer Yuriy Bilak, who lives and works in Ukraine, presents a collection of his photos, which are dedicated to Ukrainians and are a result of three years’ work. The faces in the pictures are not those of celebrities – they are the faces of common people, all of them different, but with particular national characteristics. The project embraces not only the images of Ukrainians, but the sounds of their voices, differences in their speech, and examples of their songs as well.
Derzhavniy Muzey Ivana Honchara (29A Sichnevoho Povstannya, 278 48 80). Through June 24.
THEATER
SUNDAY 27
“Miseries of Darispagne”
The touring Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi Theater and its legendary director Robert Sturua will present the play “Miseries of Darispagne,” based upon the play by David Kldyashvili, a classic Georgian author. All of the characters are our contemporaries, adapted from the original story, which took place in 19th century. Funny and sad at the same time, the play tells us about the lack of human cordiality and care in the modern world. The play is filled with Sturua’s trademarks: active scenes, plastic and choreographed insertions, and silent episodes that are sometimes more important then actor’s declamations. The play is performed in the original with translation.
Ivan Franko National Drama Theater (3 Ploshcha Ivana Franka, 279-5921). Tickets Hr 45 to Hr 350.
