You're reading: How to find lost documents in Kyiv

The Lost and Found department is an indispensable service of any city, which testifies to the fact that all human beings, regardless of nationality, can be absent-minded from time to time.

Don't expect to find your lost wedding ring or that hundred dollar bill that slipped out of your pocket at the Lost and Found Desk in Kyiv. Here the Lost and Found Desk deals only with documents. This is because there simply isn't the storage space or a secure area to keep valuables.

When a lost document is delivered to the office, the clerk first dials 09 (the number for information) and asks the operator for the telephone number of the owner. Ukrainian passports and other documents contain a stamp indicating the official city or town of residence of the owner.

However, if the document's owner has moved and cannot be found easily, the document is forwarded to the issuing agency. For instance, a lost passport would be sent to the passport office at the Department of Interior. A student ID would be sent to the Ministry of Education, and a driver's license would be passed on to DAI, Ukraine's traffic police.

The Lost and Found Desk charges Hr 1.70 for its services. Those who have lost their documents can inquire about them by going to the Lost and Found Desk where they will be asked to fill out an inquiry form, including name, birth date, birthplace, place of work and permanent address.

If a Ukrainian citizen from out of town loses a passport, the document is mailed to the passport office in the town where the owner is registered. When a foreigner loses his documents in the capital city, his country's embassy is informed of the whereabouts of the documents.

If you find someone's lost documents, the best thing to do is either bring them to the Lost and Found Desk or just put the documents in the nearest mailbox. Postal workers deliver all lost items to the Lost and Found on a regular basis.

The Desk is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch hour is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The Lost and Found Desk (tel: 229-7844) is located at 15 Volodymyrska street (near Sofiyivska ploscha).

If you lose something on transport, there is a chance of getting the lost article back. There is a Lost and Found Desk for the metro (tel: 226-3809). The office is at 35 Peremohy ploscha. Be prepared to tell the clerk when you lost the item and on what line you were traveling. Every morning, the clerk makes a round of calls to the metro stations to find out if any valuables were found.

The Lost and Found Desk (tel: 291-0406) on 2 Naberezhnoye shosse keeps track of items lost on a trolley or a tram, while the Lost and Found Desk (tel: 211-1085) in the luggage check area of the railway station deals with articles lost on trains or at the railway station.
