You're reading: Hayivky ethno party; Two French musicians at Soho

Oleh Skrypka holds a massive ethnic event at Pirohovo; A duo of French jazzmen arrives to play.

Oleh Skrypka, vocalist of the rock-folk band Vopli Vidoplyasova, deejay, organizer of various culture projects and promoter of Ukrainian traditions, invites everybody to yet another folk event, which this time is dubbed Hayivky. Hayivky party was started last year with the support of Krayina Mriy ethno festival and was carried out at the so-called “mini-Pirohovo,” Mamayeva Sloboda in Kyiv. This time the event will be held at Pirohovo itself – the large open-air museum of Ukrainian architecture and craftsmanship.

Originally Hayivky (“hay” means “hill” in Ukrainian) were a part of the Easter holiday celebrations, which involved the whole family and was dedicated to the coming of spring and the revival of nature. The celebration included dancing, playing national musical instruments, and a holiday fair.

The holiday program will involve not only performances by popular Ukrainian folk bands, but will also involve the audience in traditional rites that were part of the traditional holiday celebration and are reminiscent of pagan times.

The upcoming party will be held in the traditions of Krayina Mriy festival and Ethno Disco Parties, which are a new project recently started by Skrypka, where audiences listen to Ukrainian folk music, and learn about traditional Ukrainian arts, crafts and rituals.

As always at the events organized by Krayina Mriy, the dress code is traditional Ukrainian clothing, or the traditional clothing of other nations. But if you come in your jeans, you’ll still get in. Best of all, the event has no age restrictions, so you can meet various people there – youngsters, parents with children, as well as their grandparents. The musical part of the event will include a performance by Skrypka himself, as well as the bands “Choboty z Bugaya,” “Gurtopravtsi,” “Buttya,” “Volodar” and “Le Grand Orchestra.” In addition, the guests will be able to enjoy horseback riding and taste traditional Ukrainian cuisine.

Soho restaurant is holding another jazz evening, during which you can hear music from some of the world’s best jazz musicians. The upcoming concert will feature the French jazzmen Olivier Ker Ourio and Sylvain Luc.

Olivier Ker Ourio is a prominent harmonica player who follows the musical traditions of the legendary harmonica player “Toots” Thielemans from Belgium, who performed with artists like Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, The George Shearing Quintet, Quincy Jones and others. Ourio likes to integrate the now popular ethnic tunes, especially Brazilian and African, into his music. He received an education in music at the age of 28, after working for several years in the sphere of computer programming. Apparently, mathematics has done its part, since structuralism is considered to be a significant element of music, and it was easy for Ker Ourio to use his skills in jazz improvisation.

In 1993 he won the national jazz contest La Defence as a soloist and arranger, and from that time on he started on an active musical career. Together with such noted musicians as Bruce Arnold and Michel Petrucciani, Ourio often performs in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, the US, and France, and composes music for documentaries and feature films.

For his performance at Soho, Ourio will team up with the no less prominent musician Sylvain Luc, who started playing string instruments at the age of five and now plays a range of instruments including the guitar (his favorite), cello, violin, and mandolin.

Winner of the San Sebastian International Festival and a great lover of classical music and Basque folklore, Luc tries to combine all his preferences with the help of jazz tunes. The results of his work and imagination are heard on his most successful albums – “Piaia” (1993), “Duet” (2000), “Trio Sud” (2002), and “Ambre” (2003).
