You're reading: More cool bands headed to Kyiv

Bloodhound Gang and Placebo, among others, have included Ukraine in their tour schedules.

As it turns out, in addition to George Michael and The Rolling Stones, a at least two more great Western bands are coming over – Bloodhound Gang and Placebo. Maybe they aren’t as iconic as the previous two, but they will surely make a significant addition to Ukraine’s concert scene, which isn’t particularly overflowing with good shows.

I first heard about Bloodhound Gang five years ago, when I saw a video for their song “The Ballad of Chasy Lain,” from their hit album “Hooray for Boobies.” I found the song really cool, and my English wasn’t quite as good then as it is now, so I didn’t fully catch on to the vulgar lyrics. And indeed, vulgar is the defining characteristic of this alternative band from Pennsylvania. Bloodhound Gang is known for its crude lyrics, which are full of sexual innuendos. But the songs themselves are nothing compared to what the guys do onstage. Actually, I haven’t yet seen it myself, but from what I was told by people who’ve seen their shows abroad, the band members cross all possible boundaries, supplying their performances with acts so disgusting I can’t even write about them. But knowing their reputation and music – which is just as cool as it is crude – I can’t help looking forward to their gig, which will take place May 24 at Sports Palace. Which shocking scenes they’ve prepared for Kyiv, I wonder…

The only thing that Placebo has in common with Bloodhound Gang is that both bands are enjoying great popularity at the moment. The band’s charismatic leader Brian Molko is known for his outstanding vocals and striking features enhanced by make-up, which creates a depressed, suicidal image – characteristic of Placebo’s music in general. A line from one of their latest singles, “Meds” (from the album of the same name): “Baby, did you forget to take your meds?” pretty much sums it up. Placebo is playing in Kyiv on June 3. Among other bands expected in Kyiv are electronic duo Faithless and punk rockers The Exploited, who are headliners of this year’s Chayka fest. Enjoy.
